The versatility of a social work degree affords the holder the capacity to practice in diverse settings. This becomes a blessing and a curse. As we are often tasked with working within diverse teams with varying ethical responsibilities. Social workers are now found in virtually all practice settings like school, hospital, prisons, hospice, and the legal system to name a few. Ethical decision making becomes imperative when practicing with individuals from various professions with different professional ethical standards and obligations. This workshop explores the complexities and rewards of working in diverse settings. Due to the various practice settings, ethical decision making must be at the forefront. This workshop will explore appropriate ethical decision-making processes in diverse settings. An emphasis will be placed in best practice techniques for ethical decision making, allowing participants to engage in a variety of different intervention techniques. A focus will be on analzying various ethical codes: Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners (Title 10, .03, .04 & .06) to the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics (1.01- 1.04, 1.07, 2.03, 2.05 & 3.02. This is an interactive workshop where case vignettes will be presented, and participants will work in a group setting.

Ms. Cruz is a bilingual (Spanish/English) clinical and forensic social worker who has worked with children, adolescents and families for over twenty-years. Ms. Cruz was employed for ten years, as a forensic social worker at the Office of the Public Defender in Montgomery County. She specializes in presenting ethics and trauma workshops and attributes her sixteen years of hospital work in combination with her extensive forensic experience, in helping her to see a situation and address it from various perspectives. She has extensive experience in inpatient psych and partial hospitalization psych programs. Ms. Cruz specializes in criminal defense mitigation, dual diagnosis, crisis intervention, addiction, trauma and working with diverse ethnic groups.
